PROLLINGWORTH, lost part tithing of Titchfield hundred
Obscure. Forms related to the first element seem to be found in 'Pralle' (Sussex) 'Prawle' (Devon); Ekwall takes the latter to be hypothetical Old English 'praewhyll, prawhyll'='lookout hill'. The second is Old English/Middle English 'worth'='curtilage'. Only a run of 3 forms in the early 14th century ('Prallyngeworth(e)') suggests that this is a place name with an Old English genitive plural first element. We should reckon with the possibility of an hypothetical Old English lexical word 'pral-' or the like. Identified by Watts (1984) as a substantial part of the north end of Titchfield hundred, including the modern hamlets of Burridge and Eyers Down in Sarisbury-cum-Swanwick.
